Russelstown is situated in the south end of the parish of Addergoole, Barony of Dunmore, in Co Galway. Bounded on the south by Dawros Lower and Dawros Upper and parish of Dunmore, on the east by Rossmearin and Cloonaughgorriv, and on the north by the townlands of Bellaconneen and Knockaunkeel and Cooladooaun and on the west by Lack and Dawros Upper.
The Down Survey Map 1641 (pre Cromwell) gave the townland name as ‘Lissrickard’ and states that the owner was Moyler Bermingham (Catholic). The 1670 Down Survey Map (post Cromwell) shows the land was owned by William Higgins (Catholic). The survey states the 59 plantation acres were profitable, and 59 acres were forfeited.
O’Donovan’s Field Name Books describes the townland of Russelstown as follows; the property of John Bodkin, Esq., Bengarrou, Co Galway in 1838. It contains 602¾ acres statute measure including about 107 acres of bog. There is a Trig. Station in the centre of the townland.
Census 1841 – 1851
The townland of Russelstown in 1851 held an area of 652 acres 3 roods and 3 perches. The population in 1841 was 263 inhabitants, 129 male and 134 female. There were 50 houses, all of which were inhabited. In 1851 the townland had grown from 263 residents to 296 residents, 153 male and 143 female. There were 49 houses, all of which were inhabited. The Poor Law Valuation of the townland of Russelstown in 1851 was £179 5 shillings.
