Dalgin

Dealgain, a place of thorns

Dalgin is situated in the northern extremity of the Civil Parish of Addergoole, Barony of Dunmore, in Co Galway. Bounded on the north and east by the Civil Parish of Dunmore, on the south by the townlands of Cooladooaun and Knockaunkeel and on the west by the townland of Cormeelick South.

The Down Survey Map 1641 (pre Cromwell) gave the townland name as ‘Cunjolta [sic] and Shanvallymore and states that the owner was Lord Bermingham (Protestant). The 1670 Down Survey Map shows the land was owned by Martin Kirrowan (Catholic).

O’Donovan’s Field Name Books describe the townland of Dalgin as follows; the property of M. Blake Birmingham, Esq., Dalgin, Co. Galway, who was a member of the Birmingham (Dalgin and Millbrook) family in 1838. It contains 202 acres statute measure including about 18 acres of bog and 7 acres of planting or woody ground. Dallaghan House is in the south centre of the townland.

 

Census 1841 – 1851

The townland of Dalgin in 1851 held an area of 202 acres 0 roods and 20 perches. The population in 1841 was 114 inhabitants, 56 male and 58 female. There were 19 houses, all of which were occupied. In 1851 the townland had diminished down to 95 people, 45 male and 50 female. There were now only 15 houses, all of which were inhabited.

The Poor Law Valuation of the townland of Dalgin was £109 15 shillings and 0d (pence).

 

Old Age Pension Census Search Forms 1851

Michael Reaney Application Number C 16 2849

Michael applied for the pension on the 04th May 1916. At the time of the application, his address was Dalgin, Milltown, Tuam, Co Galway. According to Michael he was the son of Michael and Mary (nee Diskin). They were married in 1836. Michael was the only child listed on the 1851 Census Forms.

 

Griffith’s Valuation 1855

According to Griffith’s Valuation 1855, Dalgin was owned by Michael Birmingham. The total area being 202 acres 0 roods and 20 perches.

Michael Birmingham leased his land to the following people: Michael Birmingham (in fee), Luke Duignan, Patrick Duignan, Michael Halliday, James Ferrick Michael Reany, Bridget Kane, Michael Curran, Patrick Cullinan, Robert Ferrick, Michael Ferrick, John Kirrane, and Michael Connell.

Of the 202 acres 0 roods and 20 perches, Michael Birmingham kept 116 acres 1 rood and 9 perches for house, offices and land. He paid a total annual valuation rate of £103 10s 0d. Luke Duignan paid a total annual valuation rate of £3 0s 0d for house, office, garden and land. Patrick Duignan paid a total annual valuation rate of £3 0s 0d for house, office, garden and land.

Michael Halliday paid a total annual valuation rate of £3 5s 0d for house and land. James Ferrick paid a total annual valuation rate of £4 10s 0d for house, offices and land. Michael Reany paid a total annual valuation rate of £2 0s 0d for house and land. Bridget Kane paid a total annual valuation rate of £1 12s 0d for house and land.

Michael Curran paid a total annual valuation rate of 8 shillings for house and land. Patrick Cullinan paid a total annual valuation rate of £1 15s 0d for land. Robert Ferrick paid a total annual valuation rate of £ 4 15s 0d for house, office and land. Michael Ferrick paid a total annual valuation rate of £4 10s 0d for house, office and land. John Kirrane paid a total annual valuation rate of £4 5s 0d for house, office and land. Michael Connell paid a total annual valuation rate of 10 shillings for house and small garden.

The Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property in Dalgin in 1855 was £137.

 

Census 1901

There are 11 households listed in the townland of Dalgin in 1901. There were a total of 72 inhabitants in Dalgin, 39 male and 33 female. All the buildings were built and listed as private dwellings. All the houses were built from permanent materials, i.e. Brick, stone or concrete. All the roofs were built from perishable material, i.e. Thatch or wood, except for 1 house which had a permanent roof, i.e. Slate, Iron or tile.  All inhabitants were Roman Catholic except for 1 who was Church of Ireland. All the occupants of Dalgin were born in Co Galway except 2 people who were born in Co Mayo. The heads of the households were: Luke Duignan, Bridget Duignan, Michael Halliday, Patrick Ferrick, Michael Reany, Patrick Ferrick, Michael Ferrick, Michael Degnan(sic), Peter Kirrane, John Connell and Denis J. Kirwan. The census forms were collected on 08th April 1901.

Luke Duignan was 42 years old; he lived with his wife Mary who was 40 years old. They lived with their 6 children. Mary who was 13 years old, Sarah who was 11 years old, Bridget who was 9 years old, Patrick who was 6 years old, John who was 3 years old and 3 month old Margaret. All members of the Duignan household were born in Co Galway and were all Roman Catholic. Luke Duignan gave his occupation as an agricultural labourer, while Mary, Sarah, Bridget and Patrick were scholars. Luke, Mary (Jun.) Sarah and Bridget could read and write. All spoke Irish and English except for John and Margaret. Luke and his family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 2 rooms. Luke Duignan was listed as the owner of the land on which his house was situated along with 1 cow house and 1 piggery.

Bridget Duignan was 64 years old, she was listed as widowed and gave her occupation as a domestic housekeeper. Bridget lived with her 5 children, Patrick who was 40 years old, Luke who was 38 years old, Mary who was 29 years old, John who was 28 years old and Andrew who was 23 years old. Patrick, Luke and Andrew were all listed as agricultural labourers; John was a postman while Mary was a domestic housekeeper. Mary, John and Andrew were the only members of the household who could read and write. All were Roman Catholic and born in Co Galway. All members spoke Irish and English. All 5 children were listed as single. Bridget and her family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 2 rooms. Bridget Duignan was listed as the owner of the land on which her house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 fowl house.

Michael Halliday was 84 years old; he lived with his wife Bridget who was 82 years old, his daughter Ellen who was 36 years old and his grandson Michael who was 21 years old. Michael gave his occupation as a farmer, while Bridget was listed as a farmer’s wife. Ellen was a domestic housekeeper and Michael (Jun.) was an agricultural labourer. All members were Roman Catholic and were all born in Co Galway. While they all spoke Irish and English, only Ellen and Michael (Jun.) could read and write. Both Ellen and Michael (Jun.) were listed as single. Michael and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 2 rooms. Michael Halliday was listed as the owner of the land on which his house was situated along with 1 piggery and 1 fowl house.

Patrick Ferrick (Sen.) was 25 years old, he lived with his wife Ellen who was 28 years old. They lived with his father Thomas (Sen.) who was 60 years old and was a widower, his sister Kate who was 14 years old, and his sons Thomas (Jun.) who was 5 years old, Martin who was 3 years old and 1 year old Patrick (Jun). Patrick Ferrick (Sen.) and his father Thomas gave their occupations as a farmers, while Thomas (Jun.) was listed as a scholar. Patrick (Sen.), Thomas (Sen.) Ellen and Kate all spoke Irish and English. Patrick (Sen.) and his son Thomas could read only, while Ellen could read and write. All members of the Ferrick family were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway except Martin and Patrick (Jun.) who were born in Co Mayo. Patrick and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 1 front window and 2 rooms. Patrick Ferrick was listed as the owner of the land on which his house was situated along with 1 cow house and 1 piggery.

Michael Reany (Sen.) was listed as a gardener, his sister Bridget was a dressmaker, Michael (Jun.), Patrick and James (Sen.) were listed as general labourers while James (Jun.) was a scholar. All occupants were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway. All members of the Reany family were able to read and write. All residents spoke Irish and English except for Michael (Jun.), Patrick and James (Jun.). Michael and his family lived in 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 2 rooms. Patrick Ferrick was 53 years old; he lived with his wife Mary who was 50 years old, and his sons, Patrick, John and William who were 15, 12 and 9 years old respectively Patrick (Sen.) listed his occupation as a farmer whole his sons where listed as scholars. Patrick (Sen.) and Patrick (Jun.) were both able to read and write. Patrick (Sen.) and Mary both spoke Irish and English. All members of the Ferrick family were born in Co Galway and all were Roman Catholic. Patrick and his family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 2 rooms. Patrick Ferrick was listed as the owner of the land on which his house was situated along with 1 piggery.

Michael Ferrick was 56 years old in 1901, he was listed as married. Michael gave his occupation as a farmer. Michael could read and write and was a Roman Catholic. He was also born in Co Galway. Michael spoke Irish and English. Michael lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 2 rooms. Michael Ferrick was listed as the owner of the house on which his house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house and 2 barn.

Michael Degnan [sic] was 54 years old; he lived with his wife Mary, who was 53 years old and their son Mark who was 26 years old, their daughters Maggie, Catherine and Julia who were 19, 16 and 14 years old respectively. Michael was listed as a mason while his son Mark was a general labourer, Maggie was a dressmaker. Catherine and Julia were both scholars. Mark, Maggie, Catherine and Julia were all able to read and write and were listed as single, while everyone spoke Irish and English except Mark who spoke English only. All the Degnans [sic] were Roman Catholic and were all born in Co Galway. Michael and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 3 rooms. Michael Duignan [sic] was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 barn.

Peter Kirrane was 35 years old; he lived with his wife Mary who was 38 years old, and their sons John who was 8 years old and Stephen who was 3 years old. Peter gave his occupation as a farmer, while John and Stephen were scholars. John was the only one in the household able to read and write. Peter and Mary both spoke Irish and English. All members of the Kirrane family were born in Co Galway and all were Roman Catholic. Peter and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 2 rooms. Peter Kirrane was listed as being the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 piggery.

John Connell was 48 years old; he lived with his wife Mary who was 40 years old, his 7 children, Mary who was 18 years old, Michael who was 16 years old, Ellen who was 14 years old, William who was 12 years old, Maggie who was 9 years old, John who was 5 years old and Norah who was 3 years old. John Connell also shared his home with his mother Nellie who was 80 years old. John (Sen.) gave his occupation as a general labourer. Mary (Jun.), Michael, Ellen, William, Maggie and John (Jun.) were all listed as scholars. All members could read and write except Mary (Sen.), Nellie and Norah. All spoke Irish and English except John (Jun.) and Norah. All member of the Connell family were born in Co Galway and were all Roman Catholic. John and Mary were listed as married, Nellie was a widow, and all 7 children were listed as single. John and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 3 rooms. Denis J. Kirwan was listed as the owner of which the Connell house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 fowl house.

Denis J. Kirwan was 68 years old; he lived with his wife Mary L. who was 57 years old, and their 7 children, Mary L. who was 33, Denis B. who was 31 years old, Michael B. who was 30 years old, Henrietta who was 26 years old, Julia who was 24 years old, Lizzie who was 22 years old and Charles R. who was 18 years old. Denis J. gave his occupation as J.T. Land Agent, Denis B. and Michael B. were also land agents, Charles R. was a school boy. All the Kirwan family could read and write, no language was listed for the Kirwan family.

Thomas Dignan [sic] was 32 years old, he was listed as a Coachman/domestic servant to the family. James Dignan [sic] was 26 years old, he was a footman/domestic servant, Mary Curran was 51 years old, and she was a cook/domestic servant, Mary Reany was 22 years old, she was a house maid/domestic servant and Mary-Anne Griffin was 20 years old and she was also a house maid/domestic servant.

All members of the household both the Kirwan family and servants were born in Co Galway, all were Roman Catholic except for Mary L. (Sen.) who was Church of Ireland. All the servant were listed as single except for Mary Curran who was listed as widowed. All the servants spoke Irish and English, while only James Dignan, Mary Reany and Mary-Anne Griffin could read and write.

Denis J.Kirwan, his family and servants lived in a 1st class house with 7 front windows and 10 rooms. Denis J. Kirwan was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 2 stables, 1 coach house, 1 harness room, 2 cow houses, 1 calf house, 1 dairy, 1 fowl house, 1 barn, 1 potato house, 1 shed and 1 forge.

 

Census 1911

There were 12 households in the townland of Dalgin in 1911. There were a total of 72 inhabitants in Dalgin, 39 male and 33 female. Luke Duignan was listed as being a widower and his children were listed as single. Luke gave his occupation as a farmer. Patrick was a farmer’s son, John and Margaret were scholars. All members of the Duignan family could read and write, they all spoke Irish and English and all were born on Co Galway. Luke and his family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 3 rooms. Luke Duignan was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 piggery and 1 fowl house.

Patrick Duignan was 52 years old, he lived his brothers 3 brothers, Luke who 50 years old, John who was 37 years old and Andrew who was 33 years old. Patrick gave his occupation as a farmer, Luke and Andrew were both agricultural labourers and John was a postman. All the Duignan brothers were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway. All of the family spoke Irish and English, while only John and Andrew could read and write. All 4 Duignan brothers were listed as single. Patrick and his brothers lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows with 3 rooms. Patrick Duignan was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery and 1 barn.

Michael Kilgarriff was 45 years old; he lived with his wife Ellen who was 50 years old. In 1911, Michael and Ellen had been married for 3 years. Michael was listed as a farmer. They were both born in Co Galway. Michael and Ellen both could read and write and both were Roman Catholic and they also spoke Irish and English. Michael and Ellen lived in a 2nd class house with front windows and 2 rooms. Michael Kilgarriff was listed as the owner of the house on which the house was situated.

Michael Halliday was 67 years old; he lived with his wife Bridget who was 67 years old, and their son Thomas who was 22 years old. Michael gave his occupation as an agricultural labourer, while Thomas was a postman. Michael and Bridget had been married 32 years in 1911, they had 5 children and all still survived in 1911. All members of the Halliday family were Roman Catholic, all were born in Co Galway. Thomas could read and write, while both Michael and Bridget both spoke Irish and English. Thomas was listed as single. Michael and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 1 front window and 2 rooms. Mark gave his occupation as a farmer. Mark and Julia could read and write, all 3 of the household spoke Irish and English and were Roman Catholic, and all 3 were born in Co Galway. Margaret and her family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 3 rooms. Mark Duignan was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house and 1 cart house.

Patrick Ferrick (James) was 69 years old; he lived with his wife Mary (68), and their sons Patrick (Jun.) (24), John (22) and William (19). Patrick (James) gave his occupation as a farmer, Patrick (jun.) and John were agricultural labourers, while William was a farmer’s son. All the family could read and write except for Mary. All members spoke Irish and English and all were Roman Catholic. Patrick (James) and Mary had been married for 24 years and had 5 children, 3 of whom were still alive in 1911. Patrick (jun.), John and William are all listed as single. Patrick (James) and his family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 3 rooms. Patrick Ferrick (James) was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn and 1 cart house.

Michael Reany was 65 years old; he lived with his wife Bridget who was 64 years old and their sons Michael who was 30 years old, Patrick who was 27 years old and James who was 24 years old. Michael (Sen.) and Bridget had been married 34 years and had 4 children, all of whom still lived in 1911. Michael (Sen.) was listed as a farmer, Michael (Jun.) was a carpenter, Patrick and James were both agricultural labourers. All members of the Reany family were born in Co Galway and spoke Irish and English. All residents of the house could read and write and all were Roman Catholic. Michael (Jun.), Patrick and James were listed as single. Michael (Sen) and his family lived in a 3rd class house with 2 front windows and 2 rooms. Michael Reany is listed as the owner of the house on which the house was situated along with 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house and 1 cart house.

James Reany was 66 years old; he was an agricultural labourer, he spoke Irish and English and was able to read and write. James was a Roman Catholic and was born in Co Galway and was listed as being single. James lived in a 3rd class house with 1 front window and 1 rooms. Michael Reany is listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 cow house.

Patrick Ferrick (Thomas) was 37 years old; he lived with his wife Ellen who was 53 years old and their sons Thomas who was 15 years old, Martin who was 13 years old and Patrick who was 11 years old. Patrick (Thomas) and Ellen had been married 16 years and had 4 children, 3 of whom still lived in 1911. Patrick (Thomas) gave his occupation as a farmer, Thomas was a farmer’s son, and Martin and Patrick were scholars. All members of the family could read and write and all spoke Irish and English. All the Ferrick Family were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway except Martin and Patrick who were born in Co Mayo. Thomas, Martin and Patrick were all listed as single. Patrick (Thomas) and his family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and 3 rooms. Patrick Ferrick (Thomas) was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated along with 1 stable, 1 cow house and 1 fowl house.

All the family spoke Irish and English, but only John and Stephen could read and write. All members were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway except for Mary who was born in Co Roscommon. Mary Louisa Kirwan, a widow, was 66 years old, she lived with her 4 children, Mary Louisa who was 42 years old, Denis B. who was 41 years old, Julia M. who was 35 years old and Charles R. who was 27 years old. Denis B. gave his occupations as land agent and a farmer. All members of the house could read and write and all were listed as single. There was no language was listed for the Kirwan family. All of the family were Roman Catholic except Mary Louisa (mother) who was Church of Ireland. On the night of the census, Mary Louisa Kirwan and her family had a female visitor, she was listed as follows; Mary W. Bernard was 24 years old, born in England, her religion was listed as Church of Ireland. Mary Bernard could read and write and was listed as single.

Mary Murray was 63 years old, she was listed as domestic servant to the Kirwan family, James Duignan was 36 years old, he was listed as a butler/domestic servant, Michael Holliday was 26 years old, he was listed as a groom/domestic servant, Margaret Diskin was 16 years old and Bridget Gavanagh who was 15 years old, both were listed as domestic servants.

All the servants were listed as Roman Catholic. The servants were all single except Mary Murray who was a widow. All the servant could read and write except for Mary Murray. The servants were all born in Co Galway except Bridget Gavanagh [sic] who was born in Co Mayo. James Duignan and Michael Holliday [sic] were the only servants listed as speaking Irish and English.

Mary Louisa Kirwan, her family and servants lived in a 1st class house with 11 front windows and 11 rooms. Denis B. Kirwan is listed as the owner of the land on which the family house was situated along with 18 out-offices or farm steadings and were listed as following: 2 stables, 1 coach house, 1 harness room, 2 cow houses, 1 calf house, 2 fowl houses, 1 boiling house, 2 barns, 1 turf house, 1 potato house, 3 sheds and 1 cart house.
