Lifeways of Gaelic Learned Families in Ireland c.1200-1600 AD

 

As a precursor to the Galway 2020 Milltown project, which will explore the tradition of bards and the Bardic School at Ceall Cluaine, Milltown, Milltown Heritage group and Milltown Community Centre are delighted to host Dr Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, Professor of Archaeology at NUIG, to give the following lecture / information session:

 Lifeways of Gaelic Learned Families in Ireland c.1200-1600 AD

Professional learned families served the households of Gaelic and English-Irish lords in law, medicine, history, poetry, music and high-level crafts. Several of them conducted schools in the Gaelic arts on their landholdings as well as farming and dispensing hospitality. By the sixteenth century there were hundreds of such families island-wide.

Join Professor Liz FitzPatrick, NUI Galway, for an insight into the lives and work of these hereditary learned classes who were somewhat unique functionaries in European society of the time.
