Catherine Coyne McCormack
Liskeavy
By Laura J Morin
This is a picture of my great grandmother Catherine Coyne McCormack. I found this picture in my grandfather’s photo album. He probably took this picture before he left Ireland for America. This is the only photo of my great grandmother that I know of. She was born in February 1859 to John Coyne and Mary Gibbons and baptized on March 27, 1859. Her Godparents were Michael Walsh and H. Connelly. I’m not able to read her Godmother’s first name. Maybe someone can help if I include the record. I have seen her style dress in pictures of other women in Milltown including her sisters and I am curious about the style. Was there a dressmaker in Milltown that made that style or was a sewing pattern available with that style dress for women to make for themselves?
Catherine was the seventh child born to John and Mary Coyne. Her siblings’ names are Brigid, Margaret, Martin, Patrick, Mary, Michael and John. Brigid Coyne married Mike Slattery. Their daughter Catherine married John Tiernan in Brookline, Massachusetts on September 30, 1908. I would like to write more about them another time because my grandmother’s sister Pauline Reynolds knew Gregory Tiernan and my grandparents Daniel McCormack and Susan Virginia Reynolds met through them.
Catherine married John McCormack and they lived in Liskeavy. They had two sons, John Patrick McCormack and Daniel Joseph McCormack. John Patrick is in the photo with his sister Nora and a woman named Loretta. The sisters names are Margaret, Della, Nora Anna, Katie and Ellen “Nellie”. Margaret died in 1907 when she was 19 years old from pulmonary tuberculosis. Her mother Catherine reported her death. Della was the first of the siblings to immigrate. She married Dr. James A Hatton in Massachusetts and he died 3 years later. She never married again. Nora married Tom Hughes and they lived in The Bronx, New York. Katie married Alfred Cossimini. They lived in Deland, Florida. Ellen married Tom Coughlan and they lived in Manhattan, New York.
My grandfather Daniel J. McCormack married Susan Virginia Reynolds in Medford Massachusetts.
Catherine died in July 1943 in Liskeavy. Her husband John McCormack died on November 22, 1922. His death record says probably old age. He was only 70 when he died. My mother said he died from cancer on his nose so possibly melanoma.
