Carrownurlaur, Milltown, Co Galway


Carrownurlaur is a townland situated in the north extremity of the Civil Parish of Lisgeevy, in the Barony of Dunmore, Co. Galway. It is bounded on the west by the Civil Parish of Addergoole and to the south by the townlands of Carrownurlaur and Curraghaderry. Carrownurlaur is bounded on the north and west by the Parish of Crossboyne, Co. Mayo.

 

The Down Survey Map 1641 provides information about this townland called; Carronvolare. Redmond Birmingham (Catholic) was the owner in 1641 pre-Cromwell. Edward Gough (Catholic) was the owner in 1670 post Cromwell.

According to O’Donovan’s Field Name Books 1838, the standard name is Carrownurlaur. Other forms of the name are; Carrownurlaur, Ceathramhadh an Urláir, C. an Urláir, Carrowanurlaur By. S. S. Map, Carraenurlaun Larkin’s Co. Map of Galway, Carrowanurlan Inq.Temp. Jac. I.

Carrownurlaur was the property of J. Lambert of Brookhill Co. Mayo. The townland consists of 1558 acres statute measure including about 575 acres of bog. There is a triangulation Station in the north end of this townland called Carrownaurlar. There is an ancient fort in the south west end of this townland. J. Lambert was a member of the Lambert- Brookhill family.

 

Census 1841 – 1851

The townland of Carrownurlaur in 1851 held an area of 1,583 acres, 0 roods and 7 perches. The population in 1841 was 548 inhabitants, 289 male and 259 female. There were 95 houses, 3 of which were vacant. In 1851 the townland had dwindled slightly from 548 down to 438, 208 male and 230 female. There were 84 houses, 3 of which were vacant. The Poor Law Valuation of the townland of Carrownurlaur in 1851 was £469.

John Dowde – Application Number C17 7654

John applied for the pension on the 3rd October 1917. At the time of this application his address was; Cahernorlar, Milltown, Co. Galway. According to John he was the son of John and Nappie Dowd. They were married in 1843 and resided in Carrownurlaur, in the civil parish of Liskeevy, Barony of Dunmore, Co. Galway in 1851. There is a list of children provided on the 1851 Census Forms; Brian Dowde (5), Thomas Dowde, Mary Dowde (7), Bridget Dowde (2), and Margt Dowde. John was not found.

Mary Connolly – Application Number C 22 13

Mary applied for the pension on 2nd January 1922. At the time of this application, her address was, Mrs Mary Raftery, Belmont, Milltown, Tuam. According to Mary she was the daughter of John and Bridget Connolly. They resided in Carrownurlaur, in the civil parish of Liskeevy, Barony of Dunmore, Co. Galway in 1851. There is a list of children provided on the 1851 Census Forms; John Connolly, Michl Connolly, and Mary Connolly. Mary was awarded a pension of £16, 16s per annum.

 

Griffith’s Valuation 1855

According to Griffith’s Valuation 1855 the land in Carrownurlaur was owned by five landlords namely; Courtney K. Clarke, Michael Varley, William White, Ousley Knox, and Joseph Lambert. They in turn leased this land to fifty-nine tenants.

1901 Census

 

There are 62 households listed in the townland of Carrownurlaur in 1901. There were a total of 314 inhabitants, 175 male and 139 female. All the house were built with permanent materials i.e. stone, brick or concrete and all the roofs were all made of perishable material i.e. thatch or wood, except one, which had a roof made from tile, slate or iron. All the houses were listed as private dwellings. All the residents of the townland were Roman Catholic and all were born in Co Galway, except 14 people, 13 who were born in Co Mayo and one person born in England.

There were 117 out houses and farm buildings in this townland during the 1901 census. The B2 census return form seems to be omitted from the on-line record. Therefore, we do not have a breakdown of the various out houses and farm buildings for each household.

Patrick and his sons lived in a 3rd class house withy 2 front windows and 2 rooms. Margaret Brogan, (50), a widow, gave her occupation as a housekeeper. She spoke Irish and English but she was unable to read. Margaret lived with her son Thomas (22) and daughter Margaret (20). Thomas was a farmer’s son, he spoke Irish and English and he was able to read and write. Margaret was a house maid, she spoke Irish and English and she was able to read and write. Both Thomas and Margaret were listed as single. Margaret and her family lived in a 3rd class house with 1 front window and 2 rooms. Margaret Brogan was listed as the owner of the land on which the house was situated.

Bridget Cumins, (82), a widow, was born in Co Mayo, she was listed as a farmer; she spoke Irish and English but she was unable to read or write. Bridget lived with her daughter in law Bridget Cumins (45) and grandson Martin Cumins (16). Bridget was a widow, she also was born in Co Mayo, she spoke Irish and English and she was able to read and write. Martin was listed as a farmer’s son; he spoke Irish and English and he was able to read and write. Martin was listed as single. There were 63 dwellings in Carrownurlaur with 59 inhabited houses at the time of the 1911 census and 266 inhabitants. There were 142 males and 124 females and they were all born in Co. Galway except for 25 born in Co. Mayo and 2 born in England. All were Roman Catholics. The number of farm buildings and out offices combined for this large townland, totalled 254. The detailed breakdown for these farm buildings and out houses is; 21 stables, 55 cow houses, 11 calf houses, 2 dairies, 53 piggeries, 43 fowl houses, 44 barns, 1 forge, and 24 cart houses. All the census return forms were collected on the 29th April 1911 and 1st May 1911.
