Crows with their nesting habits have long held symbolic and folkloric significance. The sight of crows building their nests high in the trees was traditionally seen as a harbinger of weather patterns; an old saying goes, “If the crows build high, the weather will be dry.” This folk wisdom, passed through generations, reflects a deep-rooted connection between the Irish people and the natural world.

Crows, especially the hooded crow (caróg liath), have featured in mythology and storytelling as omens, messengers, and even as manifestations of deities like the Morrígan, the Celtic goddess of war and fate. Their nesting which is often communal and returning year after year to the same spots can be seen as a metaphor for resilience, memory, and the cyclical nature of life.
