🐞 Fun Facts About the Ladybird!

  • Tiny but mighty! Ladybirds are small insects with bright red or orange shells covered in black spots,  like they’re wearing polka-dot coats!

  • They are actually beetles, not bugs!

  • Six speedy legs! Ladybirds have six little legs to help them crawl around leaves and flowers.

  • Bright and bold! Their red and black colours warn predators not to eat them!

  • When scared, ladybirds ooze a yellow liquid from their legs. It is like pretend blood to frighten predators!

  • Evening explorers! Ladybirds are most active in the evening, a perfect time for a garden adventure.

  • Garden helpers! These tiny hunters eat pesky insects and larvae that hurt plants. They are nature’s pest patrol!

  • Ladybird babies are called larvae, and they look nothing like their spotted parents.

  • A group of ladybirds is called a bloom

  • The name “ladybird” comes from the Virgin Mary, who was often shown in red and black in old art.

  • In Irish… A ladybird is called a Bóín Dé, meaning “God’s little cow”!
