28th January 1938 (Carranagheey)
There is a well in the centre of the village. It is said it is the best well around. It is called tobar na mona. It is down in a hollow very near the bog with all the lands over it and still the water is always perfectly clean.
The farmers long ago sowed different crops to what we do now. They used to sow flax and make linen of it. We have some of the flax at home. It is now called tow. We also have sheets at home that my Grandmother made long ago. We have in out house parts of the flax wheel which they used long ago. They are only to be found in a few places in Ireland now.
Another crop they used to sow was wheat. They used to grind it into flour themselves with two stones. When the people were sowing these crops long ago they had no ploughs or harrows as the farmers have now. They sowed them all with the spade and reaped them with the scythe.
