Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

Shrove Tuesday night they used to make pan-cakes and for that reason it is called pan-cake night. They used to have meat also on that night because they used to fast from it during the Lent.

Ash Wednesday the people used to begin fasting. They used to go to Mass in the morning and put a cross on their foreheads with holy ashes. Others who used not go to Mass used to burn palm and put a cross on their foreheads with it.

On certain days the[y] used to fast from milk. These days are called black fast days. The men used to fast from tobaco during the Lent. They used to fast from sugar and eggs also, and it was an old custom on Easter Sunday to eat eggs at each meal because they used to fast from them during lent.
