Liskeavy Visit

March 2020

Tony Murphy

In March of this year, Geoffrey Cuffe, through his daughter Jean, made contact with us in relation to visiting the old graveyard in Liskeavy where his grandparents are buried. His grandfather was gate keeper in Liskeavy and lived in a gatekeeper’s cottage, south of the old graveyard. There is no trace of the cottage now but Mr Cuffe kindly gave us a photograph of it which was taken about 50 years ago. Mr Cuffe has a wealth of knowledge about the railway and the area generally. He would be only too glad to come back to Milltown and give a talk to railway and local history enthusiasts when the present pandemic is over. He served in the Irish Army and he was one of the heroes of Jadotville.

On the 5th March 2020, Mr Cuffe accompanied by his son visited Milltown and we spent an entertaining few hours in the company of this sprightly and interesting octogenarian.
