The dolphin is a beloved and iconic marine animal, often seen as a symbol of playfulness, intelligence, and a deep connection to the sea. Known in Irish as deilf, dolphins have featured in folklore and local legends for centuries, sometimes regarded as guardians of sailors or omens of good fortune. Their frequent appearances along Ireland’s west coast, particularly in places like Dingle, home to the famous solitary dolphin Fungie have captured the hearts of both locals and visitors. Dolphins also play an important role in marine education and conservation, helping to raise awareness about the health of Ireland’s coastal waters. Their presence in Irish culture reflects a longstanding respect for the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
