  • Fin whales are the second largest whale species on Earth. They can grow up to 86 feet long and weigh as much as 160,000 pounds!

  • Fin whales are native to Ireland and are often seen along the south coast, especially between Kerry and Wexford.

  • Fin whales are most active at night, when they swim, feed, and communicate.

  • These gentle giants love to eat shrimp and squid, using their baleen plates to filter food from the water.

  • A male fin whale is called a bull.

  • A female is a cow.

  • A baby is called a calf.

  • They live in groups called pods!

  • Despite their size, fin whales are sometimes called the “greyhounds of the sea” because they’re sleek and fast swimmers.

  • The Irish name for the fin whale is An Droimeitheach, meaning “the one with the fin on its back”.
