Red Squirrel
By Lauren, MNS 2022
In Irish folklore, the red squirrel (iora rua) appears more subtly than giants or fairies, yet it holds intriguing symbolic meaning. Frequently seen as a trickster figure, its clever antics and graceful leaps connect it to stories of wit and resourcefulness, core traits in Celtic myth. In Celtic traditions, squirrels were sometimes linked to natural forces: for instance, they were thought to bring rain, water, or snow, weaving them into the rhythms of the seasons. There are also connections drawn between squirrels and the warrior-goddess Maeve, suggesting a powerful, protective energy symbolised by the creature . Though these tales are scarce in mainstream collections, they hint at a meaningful, nature‑centered place for the red squirrel in Ireland’s folklore tapestry.
